Things to consider when choosing an artist

  • Your style

Consider YOUR style—what do you like? Traditional, thick lines, colorful, black and white, delicate, etc. There are many types of tattoos, subjects and styles. You should have a clear understanding of what you like, and what you want, so you can work effectively with an artist to land a concept and make it a tattoo.

  • Their style

Once you know what you like and what you gravitate towards, you should seek out an artist that you can connect with on a stylistic level. Know that asking a traditional artist for a black and gray portrait isn't likely going to turn out the way you'd have wanted. Most tattoo artists consider themselves just that—artists. They do not take on projects that they can't develop through their style—they want it to be awesome and something they can be proud to showcase, and surely you do too.

  • Size and complexity

Where you want your tattoo is a large factor in determining size and relative complexity. If you want a knuckle tattoo, it's not going to be able to hold much detail for example. If you want something with many elements, a high amount of detail, and many subjects you'll want to consider the space you devote to ensure the art holds up to the concept. And, consider what you're navigating around in a given spot (existing tattoos, marks, body hair, joints, etc.)

  • Vibe check

Know that unless you're getting a flash banger, you could going to sit with your artist for several hours, across multiple sessions. Conversations flow during your session and while we maintain a professional environment and demeanor, we are open minded people, who like to dig deep and sometimes sessions feel more like meandering philosophic discussions that surface level dribble. When looking for an artist, it's not too difficult to do a little social recon and find things in common, and vibe check an artist.

  • You budget

Our artists do fully custom tattoos based on your ideas. Custom tattooing is not cheap. It's not always expensive, but it's not simple flash churn and burn. We take time to develop your concept with you, draw it up, plan it's relative form contoured to the uniqueness of your body, and then, get to work. The bigger you want it, or the more detailed, the more time it will take, and thus the more it will cost. Knowing your relative budget up front will help our artists design your tattoo to fit within your means.
